Besides Sport

In 1930, the Founder of the Turkish Republic and its first President, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, signed Galatasaray Lycee's Honorary Guest Book.
ISTANBUL (Galatasaray University) - The university now known as Galatasaray was founded in 1481 by Sultan II.Beyazit in Istanbul to train civil servants and was then known as Galata Palace (= 'saray' in Turkish). Hardworking and talented students were educated at High school and then sent to Galata Palace to train as officials for various ranks of the Civil Service. Therefore, Galata Palace provided boarding facilities and a contemporary education for future high ranking civil servants. The building was re-constructured after the fire in 1838 and converted into "Tibbiye-i Adliye-i Sahane", the Faculty of Medecine. The first Turkish midwives and other Health Service personnel were educated in the French-medium University. Thus there was a tendency to favour Western science in the field of Civil Education.

In 1868, the name of the school once again changed to "Mekteb-i Sultani" and young students belonging to various religions were educated in a boarding-school system with a complete religious freedom and prepared for the Civil Service. In 1874, a new faculty, "Mekteb-i Aliye-i Sultaniye", was founded to teach Law, Literature, Political Science and in 1877 the university was known as "Darülfünün -u Sultaniye". At that time, seminars were organized to improve the general culture of high-ranking officials. After the Turkish Republic was established by Atatürk and his ministers changed the name of the university to "Galatasaray Lycée" and this Lycée educated students within the framework of the new ideas of the Republic. The picture to the right shows the current Galatasaray Lycée building.

Associations, clubs, and similar foundations created by Galatasaray Alumni gave financial support to the Lycée and its students. In 1981, Inan Kiraç established and became the chairman of the Galatasaray Educational Foundation which aimed to greatly increase financial supports for the Lycée. The foundation wanted to show its gratitude
